
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Right (Without Wasting Power)
Picking the right wattage for your infrared heater isn’t rocket science, but if you get it wrong, you’re either shivering or baking. Most people get hung up on the “IP44” rating. That’s just a fancy way of saying the unit is sealed up so splashes and dust won’t fry the electronics. It keeps you safe, but it doesn’t actually make the room warmer. For that, you need to look at the wattage.
How much power do you actually need?
You don’t want to just buy the biggest lamp on the shelf. If you put a 1000W monster in a tiny powder room, the room will overheat in seconds. Your thermostat will be clicking on and off constantly, which is a great way to kill your relays way sooner than they should die. For those tiny guest baths (under 4m²), stick with something between 250W and 400W. It’s plenty to keep the chill off. If you’ve got a medium-sized space (4m² to 8m²), you’re looking at 600W to 800W. And for the big master suites or rooms with those towering ceilings? Go for 1000W or more. Here’s the trick: infrared doesn’t heat the air; it heats you. Think about where you actually stand—the shower or the sink. You want the heat beam to hit those spots, not waste energy warming up a corner of the room where no one ever goes.
The trade-offs
More wattage means you feel the heat faster. Simple. But it also pulls more current from your electrical panel. If you’re installing a few of these, just double-check that your wiring and breakers can handle the load. You don’t want to trip the power every time you take a shower. Also, a quick word on shortwave lamps. They hit your skin instantly. It feels great when you’re freezing, but if the lamp is too low, it can feel a bit too intense—almost scorching. I always suggest mounting them at least 2.1 meters up. It gives the heat room to spread out.
A few tips for the install
Since we’re dealing with water and electricity, the seal is everything. When you’re installing the unit, be careful not to pinch the gasket. One tiny fold in that rubber and your waterproof rating is gone. And please, use the right cable glands. It’s a small detail, but it’s the only thing stopping moisture from creeping into your terminals and causing a headache down the road.
