
Swapping Out Your Old IR Systems Without the Headache
If you’re in automotive injection molding, you probably have some high-end European IR systems handling your pre-heating and mold temps. They’re precise. They’re reliable. But when it comes time to switch to a domestic replacement, most people make the mistake of just looking for a cheaper lamp. That’s a trap. Replacing these systems isn’t about the price tag. It’s about the physics. You have to match the spectral output and thermal density of the original gear, or you’re asking for trouble.
The “Cold Spot” Problem
Most Tier-1 shops use short-wave or medium-wave IR to keep those plastic parts within tight tolerances. If you toss in a generic emitter that doesn’t match the original wattage per centimeter, you’ll get cold spots. And we all know what happens then. Sink marks. Weld lines. Scrapped parts. We spend our time obsessing over the power density. If your original setup used a specific voltage and length to hit a target temperature, we mirror those electrical specs. Why? So you don’t have to spend your weekend rewiring control cabinets.
“Equivalent” is a Dangerous Word
Anyone can claim their part is “equivalent.” But in a molding environment, your lamps are fighting oil mist and constant heat cycling. They take a beating. You won’t have to spend days tweaking settings just to get the temperature to stabilize. But here’s the catch: if you try to push more wattage into a smaller footprint to speed up your cycle times, you’re adding a lot of heat to the mix. Before you go that route, check your cooling manifolds. If your current system can’t pull that extra heat away from the mold base, you’re just creating a new problem.
