If you’ve ever run an integrated line for high-gloss glass, you know the headache. You’re basically fighting a war between the ink and the glass. If you crank the heat too high, your screen-printed patterns start to bleed or burn. It looks terrible. But if you play it too safe with the temperature, the glass never hits that sweet spot it needs to actually temper. You end up with glass that looks great but is practically useless because it’s not strong enough. The trick is in the wavelength. I always lean toward shortwave infrared lamps. Why? Because they don’t just sit on the surface. They punch right through the ink layer to heat the glass itself. It stops that annoying “skin effect” where the ink starts boiling and bubbling while the core of the glass is still cold. Just remember: your lamp setup needs to match your glass thickness. Thicker sheets need more time or more power to make sure the heat actually soaks in evenly. Speed is a double-edged sword. Sure, high-wattage lamps are fast. But if you aren’t careful with your conveyor speed, you’re asking for trouble. I see this all the time. Someone ramps up the heat too aggressively, and suddenly the patterns are distorted. It’s a balancing act. You have to tune your belt speed and lamp power together to keep the heat moving in a steady, predictable way. Then there’s the messy reality of the hardware. You can’t just plug these things into any old outlet. A full bank of IR tubes pulls a massive amount of power. If your electrical panels aren’t rated for that peak load, you’re going to be tripping breakers the second you hit start. And for the love of everything,keep your reflectors clean. A little bit of dust on those mirrors can kill your efficiency by 20%. When that happens, you’ll be tempted to run the lamps hotter to make up for the loss. That’s a trap—it just burns out your tubes faster. At the end of the day, it comes down to matching your lamps to your glass thickness and your ink chemistry. Do that, and you’ll get that glossy finish without sacrificing the strength of the glass.
