The short answer? Yes. But you have to get the match right between the lamp and the plastic you’re using. The trick is in how the heat moves. Most old tunnels use those clunky resistive coils or outdated mid-wave emitters. They spend half their time heating up the air inside the tunnel. That’s just wasted money. Modern short-wave or medium-wave quartz lamps work differently. They push energy straight into the plastic. It’s a much more direct hit. You get your materials up to temp faster, and the whole system doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to stay there. Picking the right gear When we’re looking for a drop-in replacement, we focus on the wattage-to-length ratio. Basically, we want to pack as much heat density into the space as possible. But here is where you need to be careful. Check your wiring. If you’re jumping from a 220V setup to a higher-density array, your breakers and contactors need to be able to handle that extra punch. We usually suggest matching the lamp’s peak emission to the specific polymer you’re processing. It’s like tuning a radio—you want to hit the exact frequency the plastic “likes” to absorb. A word of caution You can’t just throw the most powerful lamp you can find into the oven and call it a day. If the heat is too intense and your conveyor is moving too slowly, you’ll scorch the surface of your plastic. You’ll probably need to tweak your belt speed or shift the lamp angles to make sure you don’t end up with “hot spots” ruining your product. The money side of things If you want to go “green” without spending a fortune, this is the easiest way to do it. You avoid the nightmare of buying a brand-new machine (the dreaded CAPEX) while seeing an immediate drop in your monthly power bill. One last tip: look at your reflectors.
