
Getting Your Infrared Lamps Right in Plastic Processing
If you’ve ever dealt with PET blow molding or vacuum forming, you know the struggle. One wrong move with your heat distribution and you’re staring at thin walls or deformed parts. It’s frustrating. That’s why we build our infrared heating tubes to a specific length and wattage. We aim for a exact wattage-per-centimeter target. The goal? Get that preform to the glass transition temperature perfectly—without scorching the plastic.
Let’s talk heat density
Here’s the thing about spec-ing a tube: it all comes down to the length-to-wattage ratio. If you’re running thick-walled containers, you need a concentrated blast of heat. A shorter tube with high wattage does the trick. And if you’re managing long banks of lamps, go with a high-voltage setup, like 400V. It keeps the current draw steady. Without that, you get voltage drop-off at the end of the circuit, and suddenly your heating is uneven across the whole machine. Not a good look.
Quartz and the “Rattle” Factor
We use high-purity quartz glass because it can take the hit. These machines cycle hot and cold fast, and cheap glass just can’t handle that kind of thermal shock. We usually stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they actually fit. When your machine is humming along at high speeds, the last thing you want is a lamp rattling around or arcing. Plus, we can coat the tubes. This shifts the emission spectrum so the heat actually hits the plastic instead of just warming up your machine frame.
Managing your stock (without breaking the bank)
Buying hundreds of spare lamps is a nightmare. It ties up your cash and, let’s be honest, filling a warehouse with fragile glass is just asking for trouble. To fix that, we use a tiered pricing setup. You get the bulk discount, but you don’t have to hoard the inventory. It’s a much safer way to play it. One last tip: watch your power supplies. High-wattage tubes pull a lot of juice. If you’re cranking up the wattage to speed up your cycles,double-check your wiring gauges. Believe me, under-spec’d wiring will melt long before your lamps actually burn out.
