
Keeping Your Bathroom Warm Without Hurting Your Eyes
Let’s talk about those bathroom heat lamps. You know the ones—they blast you with instant warmth the second you flip the switch, without having to wait for the whole room to heat up. But there’s a tricky part to making these. You want them to feel like a warm hug, but you can’t have them acting like a laser beam, especially when kids or babies are around. Their eyes are way more sensitive than ours, and that’s where things get technical. The secret is in the light. Most IR lamps throw out a huge range of light, including that harsh blue glare that can actually damage a retina. We don’t want that. So, we tweak the tungsten filament and add a special coating to the quartz glass. It basically filters out the “angry” light. Instead of a blinding flash, you get this soft, reddish glow. It still feels just as hot on your skin, but it’s much kinder to your eyes. Getting the heat where it belongs. We use quartz tubes because they let the heat waves pass right through. We usually stick between 250W and 600W—enough to keep you warm, but not so much that the fixture becomes a hazard if someone accidentally touches it. And the shape matters. We use parabolic aluminum reflectors to push the heat straight down. It keeps the warmth on you and away from your eye level. A few things to keep in mind for the install. These things are fast. Really fast. But they pull a lot of power. Here’s the thing: if you cram too many of these into a tiny ceiling, you might trip your breaker or overheat the housing. You’ve got to make sure there’s enough breathing room for the air to move. They’re pretty easy to swap in—most just use a standard R7s base—but make sure your voltage is steady. Nothing is more annoying than a flickering light when you’re trying to wake up in the morning.
