
Stop Guessing With Your IR Lamps
Ordering a short wave quartz infrared lamp based on a part number is a bit like gambling. We see it all the time. Someone buys a tube because the wattage and length match what they had before. Then, a few weeks later, they call us because the lamps are burning out or, worse, they’re scorching the product. Here’s the thing: a lamp isn’t just a part you swap out. It’s one piece of a much bigger thermal puzzle.
The secret sauce inside the tube
To get that short wave radiation (the 0.7 to 2.5 $\mu$m stuff), these lamps have to get incredibly hot. That’s why we use high-purity quartz glass—it doesn’t warp when things get intense. But the real magic is the halogen gas. It creates a cycle that basically pushes evaporated tungsten back onto the filament. It keeps the light steady and stops the lamp from dying prematurely. It’s the difference between a bulb that lasts and one that pops.
Heat, space, and the “fry” factor
Specs aren’t just random numbers. When you go for high voltage and high wattage, you’re packing a massive amount of heat into a tiny space. If you cram a 2500W tube into a tight housing, that heat doesn’t just hit your workpiece. It bounces around. It soaks into your reflectors and your wiring. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you’ll end up frying your connectors. Not a great look. Then there’s the base. We use R7s or Sk15. Most people go with R7s, but if your machine shakes a lot, a loose fit can cause arcing. That’s a fast track to a dead lamp.
Speed is great, until it isn’t
The big draw of short wave lamps is that they hit target temperatures fast. Really fast. But that speed is a double-edged sword. It’s easy to overshoot your mark. You can’t just plug it in and hope for the best. You have to get the distance, the reflector angle, and the pulsing frequency just right. This is why we’re big on field diagnostics. We’d rather come out and measure the actual surface temperature of your part instead of just guessing based on the lamp’s output. It’s the only way to make sure you’re curing your product without accidentally melting it.
