Why your old bathroom heater keeps dying (and what to do about it)
Let’s be honest: those old-school bathroom heat lamps are kind of a nightmare. You know the ones—basic bulbs that feel like they were designed for a living room, not a steamy bathroom. They burn out constantly because they just aren’t built for the humidity. One bad splash or a few weeks of heavy steam, and they’re gone. That’s why we’ve moved over to high-IP infrared heaters. Here is the deal with “IP ratings.” Basically, moisture is the enemy. In a bathroom, water loves to find its way into the sockets and seals, which is exactly how you get short circuits and nasty corrosion. We use units with high IP ratings because they’re sealed tight. It keeps the humidity out of the electrical bits, so you aren’t replacing the whole fixture every six months. But how does the heat actually feel? Traditional heaters try to warm up the air in the room. It takes forever. Infrared is different. It sends out waves of heat that hit you—and your mirror—directly. It’s instant. You flip the switch and you feel the warmth immediately, without having to wait for the entire room to stop feeling like a freezer. We use quartz glass tubes filled with halogen gas to make this happen. It lets the heater run hotter while staying compact. A couple of things to watch out for… These IR heaters pack a punch, which means they pull a lot of power. If you’re swapping out an old unit, don’t just plug and play. You’ve got to make sure your wiring can actually handle the wattage, otherwise, you’ll be tripping your breaker every time you want a warm morning. Also, because the heat is so concentrated, make sure whatever you’re mounting it to can take the temperature. You don’t want to warp your mirror frame. Getting it installed They’re designed to drop right into the spots where your old fixtures were, but there’s one catch: the gaskets. If that seal isn’t sitting perfectly, the waterproof rating doesn’t mean a thing. Get that seal right, and you’re set. Since there are no exposed filaments to mess with, you can pretty much forget about maintenance for a long time. It just works.
