
Keeping Your IR Lamps Safe in Damp Spots
Let’s be real: putting an infrared heat lamp in a steamy bathroom or a humid chicken coop is a recipe for disaster if you aren’t careful. Water and electricity don’t get along. If moisture sneaks into your terminals or leaks into the housing, you’re looking at a blown fuse—or worse, a dangerous ground fault. To keep things from going south, you really only need to worry about three things: the seal, the insulation, and the grounding.
Why moisture is your enemy
Most IR lamps aren’t built for the rain or heavy steam. Humidity tends to settle as condensation on the cooler parts of the lamp. Eventually, that water creates a bridge between the live wire and the chassis. The fix? Go with an IP65-rated sealed housing. But here’s the trick: you need a gasket that won’t melt or warp when things get hot. Silicone is your best bet here. It expands and contracts with the heat without cracking, keeping the steam out of your junction box.
Wiring it so you can sleep at night
I always suggest double-insulated cabling. It just adds that extra layer of peace of mind. The real danger zones are the connection points—right where the lamp hits the socket. These are the “weak links.” To lock them down, use heat-shrink tubing with an adhesive lining. When you shrink it, it creates a tight, vacuum-like seal that keeps moisture out. And please, for the love of everything, wire these into a GFCI loop. Even if your seal is perfect, something could knock the lamp and crack the housing. A GFCI will kill the power in a heartbeat if it senses a leak, which is exactly what you want.
The tricky part: Heat vs. Water
Here’s the catch. When you seal a lamp tight to keep water out, you’re also trapping the heat inside. If there’s no airflow, the socket can actually overheat and melt. It’s a bit of a balancing act. You have to find that sweet spot between a high IP rating and enough venting to let the electronics breathe. If you can’t vent it, try using heat-conductive potting compounds to pull that heat away from the wires.
